Homework Policy
I believe that homework is very important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of the experience in school. I give homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, preparing students for upcoming lessons, extending and generalizing concepts, teaching responsibility, and helping students develop positive study habits.
I will assign homework Monday through Thursday nights. Homework should take students no more than 45 - 60 minutes to complete each night, not including studying for tests, and long range projects. Spelling tests will be given every Friday. I will try to give students a one week notice to study for tests or to complete an assignment.
I expect students to do their best work on all assignments. I expect homework to be neat, in cursive, and complete. Students are to do the work on their own and only ask for help when they have given it their best effort.
I will check all homework. If students choose not to do their homework I will ask parents to begin checking homework each night. The first, second and third time an assignment is missing, students will be required to sign our "homework book", stating why the assignment is missing, and they will be expected to bring the assignment in the following day. The fourth time an assignment is missing, students must sign the book as well as miss recess that day. The fifth time as assignment is missing the students must sign the book, miss recess, and write a letter home explaining that if they miss a sixth assignment they will be given a detention. The sixth time an assignment is missed, the student will serve a detention after school. After this process is complete we clear the slate, and the student starts over again.
If there is a legitimate reason why the student is unable to complete the homework, the parent must send a quick note explaining why the student was unable to complete the homework.
I feel that parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, I would ask that parents make homework a top priority , provide the necessary supplies and a quiet environment, set aside daily homework times, and contact me if they notice a problem.
Parents should help their child if a problem arises, but only if the student has tried their best to solve it on their own. In no case should a parent do the homework for their child! It is important for me to see what the student can do or where they are having problems.
